Did The Freestylers Suck ?

topic posted Tue, June 10, 2008 - 9:35 AM by  Alan
... or was it just me ? I can't quite figure it out. I really thought I liked the Freestylers a lot and was pretty darn pumped to see them. The first thing I noticed was tons of near-cardable people in the club, but being grad night that was'nt to surprising. The Freestylers got going and you won't believe what happened ... the sound sucked ... again.

No offence to anyone, maybe its my ears that suck. I know i'm a sound-spoiled little deadhead used to the best quadra-phonic sound but come on. The sound was so bad in the main room that I was forced to check out the back room. Thankfully there was an excellent DJ back there named Mr. Smith. The sound is many times better in the back than in the front room. Nothing special, just 2 mackies but it sounds way clearer. If it was'nt for Mr. Smith many of us would have had a total shit-show night.

I had to ask a few times jokingly " are we sure the Freestylers are really up there spinning , could be a CD and their off hitting up chicks" The reason I say this is , and anyone that was there will vouch ... the stage area was entirely (more than usual) filled with young ,half-dancing, drunk partiers. Now I know the Freestylers are both short, but you could'nt even see them for the throng of cling-ons and orgy hopefuls.

It was that bad that I had to laugh, what else to do. I don't know why i'm surprised by any of this. I've met a lot of DJ's in the past and I find Mat and Anston very friendly. I think they get distracted with the whole bar scene of people throwing themselves on them and humping their legs while offering tray after tray of shots.

They had a good time , no doubt in my mind. As did eveyone in that little leg-humping VIP area offstage. I in some ways that they would have just given us a decent show, with good sound, and then gone off and done what-ever-the-fuck it is that they do.

That show was very disappointing in my opinion. I'll have to think twice about another gig at this venue until the sound problem is worked out.

Any comments, good or bad appreciated.

i didn't think it sucked, i loved most of the music (there were a few songs that had me thinkin 'wtf?'), i didn't find the sound to be terrible, but i never notice sound issues, jeremy said something about a speaker blowing the night before, maybe that had something to do with it.
i found it to be way too hot on the dance floor, that was the big downer for me, they need to get some air flow thru there (or open the damn door~!).
the crowd around the tables was a bit annoying, i wanted to take a few photos, but i couldn't ever see the djs.

      Thanks A

I needed a second opinion. Maybe it was my headspace. You guys definatley helped my night to be fun...

I think I need to lower my expectations of bar-room sound. I get excited like its going to be a concert.

      Thanks mrs.F

I wish tribe had an edit feature. You make a post and then you re-read it and wish you could correct spelling and misplaced ideas... oh well.

I did'nt mean to come off entirely negative. The sound at the Spirit has been bugging me for about the last 10 shows i've attended. Maybe it was just an accumulative effect. I've tried taking an extended break and coming back openminded but I keep finding it poor quaility. I mention it to the sound people and owners whenever I can, but I don't want to come across as a whiner... just a music fan who wants to dance.

I'm curious what other folks think about the sound at the Spirit.

        cheers

          i'm of your school alan,

          the sound didn't surprise me,
it's a rare talent to make a so-so soundsystem sound incredible but it can be done.
bonobo sounded great last time he spun there, but aside from him i don't remember another
show all year sounding that good in the main room.

i can enjoy a show in the main room, but only for the music being played, not the sound quality.
this is why i prefer the backroom for listening (and dj'ing).
i had more fun back there too on saturday, especially sitting back on the leather couch having tequila
          shots poured down my throat

to me, the freestylers were playing music better suited to a 20,000 outdoor rave somewhere in england
this i think is their specialty
they are fun guys to hang with, but i doubt i'd pay to see them in a small venue again.

i don't think you came off completely negative, just honest.
i know this response is a bit late....but yeah! the freestylers did suck!
the sound was awful, the music and mixes were unimpressive, and they were so unprofessional,
paying more attention to all the silly young girls, than to putting on a good show.
we felt so un-compelled to dance, that we left within an hour of arriving....
so alan, i think you're right on the mark.

i also think they need to look into the sound issue at the spirit, tho i find that most of the patrons
          are too wasted to notice....

I've only been to one show as the Spirit Bar and had to leave early with my entire party. The general consensus was that the sound quality was awful. I found it way to loud and grating. I was with a bunch of musicians at the time and even they were complaining about their ears ringing afterwards.

the sound at the spirit bar is not so bad! but its has been bad for every show ive ever seen their .frum what ive noticed JEremy is runnin all the sound through a audio mastering plugin called izatop Ozone.witch is suposed to be used to master singel audio sounds ..
as most of us know that any cd/record/mp3 that gets played has already been mastered! now y remaster a master??
it really fucks up the true master of the song!!
i wasnt at the show but i also heard that rage against the machine an freestylers dont mix!

The precedent for complete suckage will always be the last Stanton Warriors show. Absolute garbage!

I wouldn't say this Freestylers show sucked, but the last one was better.

Oh, to whoever lost their little baggie of ________ in the middle of the street @ Stanley & Baker, which me & my peeps found on your way to the show, thanks. It made for a memorable night....

            As people they seem cool.
I have never been a fan of their music. Hoola had everyone of their first few releases since 1998. Drove me absolutely nuts.

Well i've thought about it a bit and come to the conclusion that the old "Taffy Jacks" layout was better for sound than this arrangement. When the stage was at the far end to the right as you walk in and the sound board was behind the dancefloor, it sounded great ! This was for Lorin , Cheb I Sabbah and others.

I think its a sound issue with the way the room is laid out versus how the new speakers project. The sound bounces unbaffeled against the opposite wall. there are quiet corners ... like right beside the stage either side and other places.

Blah blah, just an opinion. I really do believe the sound was much sweeter with the old back 2 front approach.

As Nicole said, it did'nt stop me from having a good time ! I just have a new hobby... milling about and bitchin about sound .

              cheers all

I have to say - I REALLY REALLY enjoyed myself the first night (Friday). The vibe was chill, the Freestylers were having fun (Aston came out and rocked the dancefloor with us), there was no rope up around the DJ booth, and the bar staff had no problem whatsoever with me filling up my Klean Kanteen in the bathroom. A couple of them asked to smell the contents - no big deal - I just want to hydrate!

Anyway, the second night was CRAAAAAAZY. I don't know what happened but the vibe went from mellow, fun and playful the night before to....well, let's just say I felt like I was at a night club in Vancouver. I was told to put my metal canteen away or it would get taken from and I'd be kicked out. I had to go to the Manager just to get a glass of water because the bartender wouldn't serve one to me. My girlfriend (who is 3 mos pregnant) had issues getting water too, until she mentioned her pregnancy. Then the bartender left the bar, followed her outside when she left, and LECTURED her about being at the bar while she's pregnant. The ropes around the DJ booth? Lame. And the Freestylers looked like they just weren't as into it as the night before.

Funny - Saturday was the night with more 'hype'. Just goes to show you, I guess, that expectations of something can sometimes leave you feeling rather flat.

                That's my 2 cents.

Friday was fine, but left me wondering why I paid $25 to go. I didn't feel it was worth it, so I'm put off the bar for a while, until Malente anyways. I would like to see Z-Trip, but $40?! No way. Besides, it's summer, I want to be outside.

Good news people. The Spiritbar has ordered 2 pairs of amazing QSC HPR12 powered loudspeakers. They are the finest we have heard here @ Eddy Music, & I'm sure you'll hear the difference within a month....

As for shows, anyone who says we aren't "spoiled", here in Nelson, is deluded. Only Southern California has a better lineup every weekend! The price is the price; smaller venues = higher ticket price, but a more intimate setting, & probably worth the price....

I have quite enjoyed this post...it's tough to express honest reactions to experiences when they aren't fully positive. We live in an environment where everything is pretty awesome most of the time, when it's not, to voice it can seem like self indulgent wallowing. Most of us are fairly passive by nature, drama is an unwanted element in our day to day. That doesn't mean that expressing our dissatisfaction is a weakness .. it can be an honest reflection of our expectations. I believe that in life we should always expect the highest of standards .. why not.. you expect it of yourself don't you? In respects to the Spirit Bar, I'm glad they are stepping up to the sound system issue. There's only so long that Nelson will only have one nightclub. It's good for business to feel the pressure of demand, complacency doesn't do anyone any favours . Personally, if I'm going out, I'm looking to dance to quality music on a sound system that's bigger than the one that I rock in my own home. I appreciate that within certain genres, Nelson provides a pretty comprehensive exposure of the who's who.. but just because there's big hype doesn't mean that they are going to be any good. It seems to me, and granted my tastes swing to the underground, that it's the same acts that keep getting booked because they're (commercially) successful. It's in your best interest to be honest about your experiences, the music is there for your pleasure after all, your paying for it. I appreciate that the mob mentality kicks in and people tend towards hitting up the events that hold big capacity, but really there's a whole world of incredible musical talent out there. Let's value our honesty and bring on the truth..

I definately welcome feedback with regards to the club, positive or negative. I certainly acknowledge that it is time to beef up the sound quality which doesn't necessarily mean louder sound. Perhaps a drawback from our set-up is the fact that we have a lot of people sleeping in the rooms upstairs so we try and be mindful of that. Bass and crowd noise at the end of the night really turns off a lot of overnight guests. We do however notify them that we are not a quiet property when they book over weekends.

We are upgrading our mains to the QSC's (bought locally!) and are purchasing more bass from Soniclab. The old mains (EVs) will be used for monitors and enhanced sound in the room. We are also looking at enhancing some of our lights and visuals with people like Nikko and Tabbitha. We have always believed in continually reinvesting in this old hotel, in all facilities all the time. It's a never ending work in progress.

As far as entertainment goes, we try to make it diverse and top quality. You're right, we do tend to stick to the commercially viable acts that are proven to bring in a crowd - it's good for business and it's giving the people what they want. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Folk artists, blues and some other live genres or even drum & bass and trance dj's have failed to be supported so I have tended to stay away from them. I haven't given up on them but one needs to be selective in what is booked. I'll be the first to acknowledge that there are many other local dj's and live acts that have not yet had the chance to play. Sometimes it's up to them to take the time to introduce themselves to me to get a date.

Lastly, people always assume that we love being the only club open in town but I don't share that sentiment. Competition is a good thing...it keeps you on your toes. On big nights in creates a lot of stress on our door staff to maintain our capacity. Those guys have a difficult job. It's also great to have options out there and it's what makes Nelson so unique. Look at all the fantastic restaurants for example...you'll be hard pressed to find a bad meal in town and it makes our quality of life and tourism that much better. I keep asking the 198 guys when they're coming back because we all can use variety in our lives and hell, it gives me a place to go lose it every once in awhile! Apparently they are aiming for Halloween and I hope they'll be ready for that. It' seems to be the best time of the year for a good party.

I won't get any more involved in the discussion that that but I agree with the last posting, be honest and truthful in this forum. That's what it's here for and it for one has helped to make Spiritbar a better place. Thank you for supporting us.

                          Ryan

                            Thanks for posting.

I have said it in other threads and I wanted to make sure that I get the idea across here that I love the Hume Hotel ! I really do and have for a long time. Its the finest eatery/pub/nite club/bar/fine dinery that you will see anywhere. Excellent diversity in one building. The thing that especially makes it for me is the staff. Every night that i'm in the building I walk around and interact with the staff. From the doorpeople to the bussers, to the bartenders, cooks, security and the servers they are all top notch people.

I can't say enough good things about the building, the family, the staff ... Fantastic !

If you hear me bitch a bit about the sound quality at a gig it should be taken knowing the above facts. I apologize in so far as I did not mean to come off sounding harsh, bit I did a bit and there is no edit feature. Oh well, frank discussion is always good.

To Ryan I say great job buddy ! Look forward to seeing you at some upcoming spirit bar gigs.
