Wassabi Collective know how to ignite a groove with a lot of rhythmic drive and party-hearty energy. This Canadian five-piece are progressive — they can bounce on a reggae groove or launch into a pulsating, tribal soul shakedown. They can switch with ease between hip hop punches and organic electro textures, ribbons of soul and trance winding throughout — bringing their hopping audience into a pulsing mass. Melissa Meretsky, who shares vocal duties with the raw and real reggae rudeboy Gisto, has a young, boundless energy and a mesmerizing rhythm. Melissa’s powerful and assertive vocal stylings frequently take the lead, dripping with a molasses-smooth warmth. As the music intensifies Meretsky can get feisty, driving her drums with a force to be reckoned with, twirling about in an alluring display of skilled instrumentation and sensual swaying, arms a flight, interrupted only to bounce back to her congas in a fiery display. Dont miss it!!! Doors at 10pm with a special opening set by Selecta Meszenjah.

Hiya, Just wanted to share that I*ve been Feeling REALLY GOooOD about some choices I have made over the last year*

Im making a public declaration to *Only purchase RECYCLED LEATHER goods from now on and not wear fur for fashion*

After finding out how destructive the leather industry is to the environment-!!ONE OF THE WORST!! The CHEMICALS used to soften and dye leather are really messing our earth up! even more then our plastic wares*

Many folks think that leather is OK because the cow is used for meat-BUT *comon, the beef industry really sucks for a million(at least) reasons-do you really need me to start listing them?

Many folks think that most of the leather we wear even comes from these cows-BUT NO, much of the leather that you and i wear comes from cows in India which have been swindled from very poor families who have worshiped the cow from birth as sacred-are then sold only on the assurance to the families that the cows will remain well treated but then are basically traumatized till they are slaughtered *inhumanely
***holy cow, finding that out was a hard one to swallow!
Eventually i would love love LOVE to see us even evolve out of wearing leather for fashion but to be realistic this will take time...

And fur for fashion?* arnt we over that yet?! we have been splashing red paint on fur coats for decades now!
even if its recycled we are still promoting that fur is cool draped over our dapper shoulders and sexy backs...
POOR ANIMALS! comon-this just needs to end my loves!

Please see the movie ***Earthings*** free on Google Video http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=earthlings&sitesearch=# for a very thorough download* brace yourself and stay brave enough to watch some truths for the whole 1 hour 35mins.

Im writing this from my heart, because i see so many wikked amazing folks out and about seemingly unaware of the blaring hypocrisy that is the fashion and beauty they are expressing to the world.
SOOO many amazing folks making leather coats, cuffs, pants, boots, belts you name it...do they ask themselves if this is right, the footprint they are stomping onto the planet they revere? how can they not? and if that question hasnt come up then im asking them now to at least ask themselves-deeply ask*

much change takes place with the choices we make, where we spend our dollars, how we walk our talk*

Ok 10/4 good buddies
over n out*~
much love

This would be a major facility which would drastically change the face of nelson with the constant noise of machinery and clouds of dust coating baker st. Apparently this land is already zoned industrial and CPR has a lot powers that normal corporation's do not. From what I hear city council is opposed but powerless to stop this development. I would recommend that anyone who cares about preserving Nelson should try to dig up as much info as they can on this. It makes the kootani landing development and the proposed development at red sand pretty insignificant, and perhaps evan just smoke screens to divert peoples attention from the real threat facing our community.

News of imminent deportation shocks U.S. army deserter

Written by Rod Mickleburgh, GLOBE & MAIL

Wednesday, 09 July 2008

VANCOUVER -- Canadian authorities appear to be speeding up efforts to deport U.S. army deserters, despite a key Federal Court decision just last Friday in favour of so-called "war resisters".

(Photo: Robin Long is led to an immigration hearing room in Vancouver.)

Deserter Robin Long, his supporters and his lawyers were stunned yesterday to learn that Mr. Long, currently being held in a Nelson jail, was in danger of being sent back to the United States as early as today.

"His removal is imminent ...probably within a day or two," Canada Border Services Agency lawyer Rick Lengert told a hastily arranged Immigration and Refugee Board hearing.

There had been no warning to Mr. Long that he was in danger of being sent back to the United States so quickly, and it came as a particular shock to his lawyer, Shepherd Moss, in light of last week's court decision upholding deserter Joshua Key's appeal of his failed refugee application.

Mr. Moss served notice that he would seek an emergency, after-hours sitting of the Federal Court to ask for an immediate stay of his client's deportation.

Late yesterday, the border agency agreed to make no move to deport Mr. Long until Monday, giving his lawyer a bit more time.

But Mr. Long's supporters were nonetheless outraged by the suddenness of his arrest and near deportation.

The 25-year-old failed refugee claimant was arrested in Nelson on a deportation warrant on Friday, the same day as Mr. Key's victory in the courts.

No one on Mr. Long's side was informed until just before the Immigration and Refugee Board hearing began yesterday afternoon that approval for his deportation had been granted by immigration officials two months ago.

"Basically, they're trying to kidnap war resisters and get them into the hands of George Bush," steamed Bob Ages of the Vancouver War Resisters Support Campaign. "This is the closest thing to rendition we've had in this country since Maher Arar. It's outrageous. What are these enforcement people up to?"

If Mr. Long is deported, he will be the first of an estimated 200 deserters who have sought refuge in Canada to be returned to the United States, marking an official end to the country's policy of welcoming American draft dodgers and deserters that began during the Vietnam War.

He remains in jail in the idyllic Interior city, home to many young men who have fled U.S. military service because of the war in Iraq.

Mr. Ages said Immigration Minister Diane Finley should be pressed about the matter, given Friday's pro-resister court decision and last month's vote in Parliament favouring a motion to grant asylum to American deserters.

The House of Commons vote was not binding on the government.

Mr. Long left the army after two years service and arrived in Canada in 2005. He has said he deserted because he did not want to participate in "an illegal war of aggression in Iraq. Morally, I felt I couldn't do that."

His claim for refugee status was rejected.

He was arrested for violating terms of his release from previous custody by failing to notify the border agency of his latest address in Nelson.

The immigration hearing was called to decide whether he should remain in custody, until he is returned to the U.S.

Testifying by telephone from his Nelson jail cell, Mr. Long told the hearing that that he had been "couch surfing" at various local residences, and didn't realize the seriousness of having to report every time he changed locations.

But adjudicator Leeanne King ordered him to remain in jail. "There is no stay in place. You are removable," she told Mr. Long over the phone. "The department is going to remove you tomorrow, or as soon as possible ... so obviously now your physical whereabouts are even more crucial."

... or was it just me ? I can't quite figure it out. I really thought I liked the Freestylers a lot and was pretty darn pumped to see them. The first thing I noticed was tons of near-cardable people in the club, but being grad night that was'nt to surprising. The Freestylers got going and you won't believe what happened ... the sound sucked ... again.

No offence to anyone, maybe its my ears that suck. I know i'm a sound-spoiled little deadhead used to the best quadra-phonic sound but come on. The sound was so bad in the main room that I was forced to check out the back room. Thankfully there was an excellent DJ back there named Mr. Smith. The sound is many times better in the back than in the front room. Nothing special, just 2 mackies but it sounds way clearer. If it was'nt for Mr. Smith many of us would have had a total shit-show night.

I had to ask a few times jokingly " are we sure the Freestylers are really up there spinning , could be a CD and their off hitting up chicks" The reason I say this is , and anyone that was there will vouch ... the stage area was entirely (more than usual) filled with young ,half-dancing, drunk partiers. Now I know the Freestylers are both short, but you could'nt even see them for the throng of cling-ons and orgy hopefuls.

It was that bad that I had to laugh, what else to do. I don't know why i'm surprised by any of this. I've met a lot of DJ's in the past and I find Mat and Anston very friendly. I think they get distracted with the whole bar scene of people throwing themselves on them and humping their legs while offering tray after tray of shots.

They had a good time , no doubt in my mind. As did eveyone in that little leg-humping VIP area offstage. I in some ways that they would have just given us a decent show, with good sound, and then gone off and done what-ever-the-fuck it is that they do.

That show was very disappointing in my opinion. I'll have to think twice about another gig at this venue until the sound problem is worked out.

Any comments, good or bad appreciated.
Having been an instrumental member of the Canadian electronica scene for over 11 years, he has remained not only current, but has left an unmistakable imprint with his sound. One of the original members of Vancouver's largest and most prolific production companies, Twisted Productions, Deliverance AKA Jeremie Voillot has played a large part in forging Vancouver’s rave and club scene from the very beginning. Signed last year to Canadian digital imprint ‘Sovereign House Records’ with Shawn Jacobson, his productions are now being released worldwide and receive radio play from some of Europe's biggest talent. Having opened for too many big names to list, his signature party pumping basslines combined with an uncanny ability to read the room leaves every dancefloor wanting more. Currently residing in Edmonton Alberta, he has joined forces with longtime friend and funky breakbeat dj Jroc and created the new DJ group the Soul'd Out Dj’s. They have Edmonton's busiest breaks, house and electro club night, "Rockstar Tuesdays" and show no sign of stopping soon.

The Ultimate AC/DC Tribute... 3rd Annual and back by crazy demand. This band rocks... to put it simply. The previous 2 shows have sold out... don't be stuck on the street. This is arguably the best party on June 28th in the entire world... We're really not going out on a limb in saying that. There are Tribute Bands... and there's BC/DC.

Tickets available at the club and at by clicking on the buy ticket link below.
Doors open at 9pm. Reserve your dinner seat early.

There are Tribute Bands... and there's BC/DC.

They were born of bush party ashes in the summer of 1999. Some 400 unexpected gigs later,
Canada's BC/DC has systematically redefined the concept of a tribute band, garnering iconic
status amongst diehard fans, agents, and venues from Vancouver BC to Jackson Hole,
Wyoming. From the backyard biker bashes of Ymir, to the star-studded legendary rooms of Las
Vegas. From Nelson to New York City.

While a web search will turn up dozens of AC/DC cover acts around the world, there aren't likely
many who've so successfully branded the Aussie band's timeless raunch with such epic rock n'
roll fury, while also managing to bottle the essence of a wild frontier lifestyle.

Unlike many tribute acts claiming to be "North America's #1 Clone" or "Just Like the Real Thing",
BC/DC has turned the tables. The band takes a comedic approach, claiming the tunes as their
own, and to having "heard of some BC/DC tribute band from Australia". They rarely give factual
interviews to big city press. Adding to the schtick, the band members all go by comic aliases -
lead singer Brendan Raftery's Brian "Bon" Johnscottson paying respects to both AC/DC's famous
frontmen. It's working. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

BC/DC’s live show has become a legendary, and necessary “rite-of-passage” amongst their
unwavering supporters and believers. With over-the-top stage energy, they deliver every last note of all the classic songs with absolute authority. You get tired just watching them. BC/DC is heavily rooted in the Bon Scott-era catalog (Dirty Deeds, TNT, Jailbreak, Let There Be Rock), but also covers AC/DC’s second “golden era” with all the essentials; Back in Black, For Those About to
Rock, Hells Bells, and many more. Hey, there’s always another AC/DC tune… and BC/DC always
seems more than eager to blast it out.
Tickets @ Eddy Music ($15 Advance/ $20 Door)

Wassabi Collective were just announced as winners of the Vox Populi "Peoples Choice" component at the 7th Annual Independent Music Awards for Best Song in the Jam Category . There were votes cast from all over the world and it is a great honor for the band. Over the years their music has evolved and become more versatile, dropping the marimbas and incorporating other instruments and techniques, like guitars, keyboards and sequencing. They often hear that their studio albums simply don’t capture the energy of their live shows, so they’re releasing a new one entitled, Live From Moncton, at this weekend’s performance. “All of the messages within our music are the kind of things we think about daily, when it comes to the state of the world and state of affairs here, there’s a lot to be addressed — some of it directly, some of it indirectly — just through environment or attitude to kind of create changes,” guitarist Brent Hongisto explains. The group, just back from a sold out weekend on the West Coast are excited to welcome the Summer in their Hometown.

Wassabi Collective's live show is what has made them a favorite among the underground independent music scene from coast to coast. Feeding off their fans' energy and cries for more, the depths of musical exploration and discovery the band hits night after night shows no bounds. Wassabi is as much at home outside singing to the sun or rocking under the stars as they are onstage inside a sweaty, pulsating venue, sending their devoted dance party twisting and turning late into the night and on into sweet bootie-shaking heaven. An explosive live show that ebbs and flows and rocks and climaxes and grooves keeps their fans hungry yet fulfilled.

With special opening set by local favorite Dj Jitterbug!

*PRONOIA IS THE ANTIDOTE FOR PARANOIA:
How the Whole World Is Conspiring to Shower You with Blessings*

Here's an excerpt:

Welcome to the PRONOIA NEWS NETWORK. Here's the news.

The world has become dramatically more peaceful since 1992, according
to the non-partisan Human Security Report. Wars, coup d'etats, and acts
of genocide have declined by 40 percent. Weapons sales have dropped
33 percent during the same time, and the number of refugees has
decreased by 45 percent.

The cause of these developments is the unprecedented upsurge of
international activism since the end of the Cold War, spearheaded by the United Nations.

Elsewhere, life extension researchers now believe that there is no absolute
limit to the human life span. The average life expectancy is 30 years more
than it was a century ago, and is steadily climbing.

Literacy and education levels are rising steadily all over the globe.

Since 1970, the percentage of students going to secondary school has more than doubled.

The World Health Organization reports that in the next 24 hours, 200
million people will make love on this planet, as they do every day of
every year. Experts estimate that the orgasmic energy generated during a
single rotation of the planet could, if harnessed, provide enough power to light a
medium-sized city for a month.

Briefly, here's a look at the rest of the top stories.

Accelerating rates of intermarriage are helping to dissipate ethnic and
religious strife worldwide.

Acreage devoted to organic farming is rapidly increasing.

Death rates from cancer are shrinking.

Child abduction by strangers has dropped precipitously.

In 60 years, there hasn't been a lower birth rate among teenage girls
than there is now.

The number of America's black elected officials has sextupled since 1970.

In recent years, the rivers and bays of New York City have been almost
completely cleansed of raw sewage and industrial pollution.

Vast supplies of frozen natural gas lie beneath the oceans, harboring
more potential energy for human use than all of the world's oil
reserves, and could be mined with the right technology.

If forced to decide between having a bigger penis and living in a world
where there was no war, 90 percent of all men would pick universal peace.

You have at least a million relatives as close as tenth cousin, and
no one
on Earth is any farther removed than your 50th cousin.

The world's largest private bank, Citigroup, has agreed to stop
financing projects that damage sensitive ecosystems.

The giant timber company, Congolaise Industrielle des Bois,
voluntarily agreed to stop cutting down trees in a virgin rain forest in the
Congo.

Every second the sun generously transforms four million tons of
itself into energy and bestows it on us free of charge.

With every dawn, when first light penetrates the sea, many seahorse
colonies perform a dance to the sun.
Most HMO executives now believe prayer and meditation can expedite
the healing process.

Each of the 50 trillion cells in your body can be considered a sentient
being in its own right, and they all act together as a community,
performing an ongoing act of prodigious collaboration.

A survey of a thousand poets suggests that the five most beautiful
words
in the English language are
"epiphany," "undulates," "luminous," "crucible," and "melody."

Finally in the news, biologists have proved that with each breath,
you take
into your body 10 sextillion atoms, and—owing to the wind's
ceaseless circulation—over a year's time you have intimate relations with oxygen
molecules that have been exhaled by everyone who has ever lived,
including Joan of Arc, Gengis Khan, Cleopatra, and Malcolm X.

You have been tuned to PNN, the Pronoia News Network. Our report has
been brought to you by the state of mind that the poet John Keats
enjoyed when he said, "If something is not beautiful, it is probably not true."

The Underground Arts Railroad was created with the intention of connecting amazing people in the independant Candian music industry to each other.

http://www.undergroundartsrailroad.com

Who are the people behind this site anyway?

We are a young couple with kids that, for five years had a small music venue/bookstore/café on the far west coast of Vancouver Island and also have a touring musician in our family. We operated Words End with determination and it became known for having fantastic gigs with a wonderful audience that paid musicians well. We were blessed to have so many fabulous people share our stage and our town. We lived literally at the end of the earth so it was a difficult sell to get musicians to our part of the country. It became a big part of our job trying to find other gigs for musicians to make the trip to the remote coast worth the journey.

We began to connect with other remote, tiny venues and a mini circuit was born.

Through this process we realized that there were so many people like us, working hard for the love of live music and trying to bring it to small communities across Canada. Each one had its own little scene and each one was powered by amazing people making extraordinary efforts to get great artists on their stages.

As musicians we realized that some of the best venues in Canada were little known places with incredible community support. We created the Underground Arts Railroad with the intention of connecting artists to each other and to great venues and festivals across Canada.

We have seen many sides of the music community and recognize the difficulties of being an independent musician or a venue in this shifting time. We also realized how difficult and time comsuming it is to find information on every aspect of performing and trying to maintain as well as promote a creative music career. We wanted to make it easier for musicians so they could spend their time making music, not searching the internet for information.

We also wanted to make it easy on venues so that they were not spending so much time wading through profiles, phone calls and press kits, searching for suitable musicians and trying to find them other gigs as well.

Ultimately we would like everyone to have an easier time getting live music to people who appreciate it. This site was created with these needs in mind.

Our intention is to offer an alternative, to help musicians get organized, help venues and festivals find musicians and help everyone learn to market themselves easily and efficiently, leaving more time for creating music…and getting it out there.

So, we have compiled as much information as we can for you right here on this amazingly comprehensive website.

For venues and festivals looking for new talent, we provide access to new and established independent Canadian musicians.

For musicians, our incredible sort fuctionality makes it easy to find venues anywhere in Canada that are most suited to your music.

Our Direct Conect funtionalty allows you to directly contact the venues that would be most interested in you.

Our classifieds and forums are a great way to connect with everyone in this community.

You may have heard of the Conservatives govenments draconian Bill C-51. Its the bill that makes natural health products into drugs and brings harsh enforcement against natural products that have a theraputic claim. Think those balms, tinctures, skin cremes and all the other local theraputic herbal remedies you see sold at the coop. Thats what we are talking about here...

" Bill C-51 Will:

Allow Government agents to:

-Enter private property without a warrant Section 23.4
-Confiscate your property at their discretion Section 23.2 a
-Dispose of your property at their discretion Section 23.3 c
-Seize your bank accounts without a warrant
-Charge you for shipping and storage of your property Section 23.3a-b
-Store your property Indefinitely without paying you for damages Section 23.2 d
-Levy fines of up to $5,000,000.00 / 2 years in jail per offence. Section 31.1

Introduce new legislation that will:

-Allow laws to be created in Canada, behind closed doors, with the assistance of foreign governments, industrial and trade organizations Section 30.7
-Allow "Crack house style" of enforcement on natural health providers Section 23.1
-Allow enforcement to be considered on more than 70% of Canadians who use NHP's Health Canada Reference
-Allow the minister, based on opinion, to shut down research without any scientific reason or evidence of risk or harm Section 18.5
-Allow the minister, based on opinion, to allow or disallow market authorizations for Natural Health Products Section 18.7 (1) "

Here's a few sites that you can read up on Bill C-51. Its part of that Codex scheme that you heard of long ago. Its here, its real , and you can do something about it.

If you feel strongly that you want to oppose Bill C-51 there is something that you can do. The office of Health Minister Tony Clement has a phone number (which he wishes was not published). This number is a direct line to his Ottawa office. Thousands of people have phoned and POLITELY stated that they are against Bill C-51. The nice person on the other end will likely tell you " many people have called, I'll take your name and pass on your opposition to the minister"

Please call during Ottawa business hours and again please be nice. Also pass this number to anyone you know who uses natural health products, herbal remedies, or anyone you think would help. This is truely a Canada-wide ,grassroots , spontaneous action.

Tony Clement's number to voice opposition to Bill C-51 is : 1-613-957-0200

Thanks for your consideration.

"I love the concept of the man-machine writing process, but one thing I realized while making this record is that there's a spirituality in human collaboration. As much as I enjoy working in the studio alone, having another input helps bring out new ideas... Speaking in terms of lateral thinking, it helped burn a few new neural pathways." Q

Uberzone is the brainchild of southern California native Q (named after the "gizmo" -loving James Bond character). Like his namesake, Q is a die-hard collector of all things electronic, and has been collecting electronic-music gear since his early teens.

His early singles, "Botz" and "The Freaks", released on taste-maker indie dance label City of Angels, were critically acclaimed club tracks that established Q as one of the leading American producers of breakbeat music. These singles were charted consistently by DJs like Florida's DJ Icey and the UK's Adam Freeland, among others. His remixes of Sarah McLachlan, The Crystal Method and BT also established him as one of the biggest names in the American dance scene. Spin Magazine named Uberzone as one of the six producers to create "the biggest beats ever."

Q does have Faith in the Future. "Sometime during my life I turned from a pessimist into an optimist. Faith in the Future ties into technology, electronic music and my lasting desire to live in the Jetson Age." Perhaps that's why Uberzone's debut album, "Faith in the Future" has a feeling to it unlike any other electronic album. It recalls influences from quirky sci-fantasy film soundtracks to "Planet Rock" to dream-pop to the energetic, future breaks that Uberzone has created in ways no one else can approach.

Holy Smoke Four heading to court

NELSON, BC -The Holy Smoke Culture Shop cannabis trafficking case is scheduled for a five day trial in the Nelson Court House from Monday, April 28 to Friday, May 2, 2008. The case began in July 2006 with the arrest of Paul DeFelice, followed soon after by the arrests of Alan Middlemiss, Kelsey Stratas and Akka Annis , just months before celebrating the shop's 10th anniversary.

The Holy Smoker's plan on answering the cannabis trafficking charges with a common law defence of Necessity which is reputedly one of the most difficult arguments to make in criminal law. Basically the accused pot dealers need to prove that they were preventing more harm than they were causing by selling high quality cannabis to adults in a controlled setting. There will be an expert witness from the US to testify on behalf of the defence as well as local eye-witnesses.

“We don't believe that prohibition has been effective in controlling cannabis or any drugs for that matter,” said DeFelice. “In fact there is overwhelming evidence from every parliamentary committee ever struck that prohibition causes much more harm than it prevents. We do not want to see young people coming into contact with hard drugs and unscrupulous people whether it's in the public garden or in jail.”

Donations to the Holy Smoke legal defence fund will be gratefully accepted at Don Skogstad's Law Office, 415 Kootenay Street, Nelson, V1L 5P7. For more information visit www.holysmoke.ca.
